Gillian Harrison

Graduated with an interdisciplinary MSc/PhD in the Doctoral Training Centre for Low Carbon Technologies

Thesis: Ethical Considerations of a Low Carbon Transport Fleet Using a Systems Dynamics Approach to Assessing the Uptake and Impact of Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Dr Gillian Harrison's research interests lie in the conflict between climate change mitigation and the current lock-in to carbon intense technologies and lifestyles. Of particular focus is sustainable mobility and impacts on the worst off.

She submitted her PhD thesis in 2013 entitled "New Fuels, New Rules: Modelling Policies for the Uptake of Low Carbon Vehicles within an Ethical Framework ". This novel interdisciplinary study combined vehicle technology assessment, policy appraisal, moral philosophy and system dynamics modelling, leading to a proposed framework for an improved approach to modelling and policy appraisal which incorporates ethics.

Since November 2013, Gillian has been working as a post-doctoral research officer for the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for Energy and Transport in the Netherlands. In her work here Gillian is developing a comprehensive powertrain technology transition market agent based system dynamics model of the EU light-duty vehicle market. The research resulting from the model explores the interaction between electro-mobility policies and the wider energy system, and will be used to inform EU policy decision making, as well as producing academic output.
