Project Title: Integration of Low Carbon Technologies into Power Systems

Background

I graduated with a First Class MEng in Civil Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in 2011. Prior to joining the DTC I spent a short time working in the construction industry as a site engineer.

My Research

My work is concerned with analysing the costs and impacts of increased renewable generation on power systems and markets. As such I take a holistic approach, understanding that the power system is complex and technologies and policies cannot be assessed in isolation. I have developed models of the British power system to consider the technical benefits of increasing energy storage and interconnections to other European systems. More detailed models have also been developed to understand how thermal plant will be utilised in future power systems with increased variable generation. More recently, I have been developing longer term expansion models. These models are useful for analysing energy policy and electricity market design in systems with increasing renewable penetration.
