Thom Best
Interdisciplinary MSc/PhD in the Doctoral Training Centre for Low Carbon Technologies
Project Title: CCS Efficiencies
Background
I started my university education at Sheffield Hallam in 2004 studying mechanical engineering. This is where I received my first introduction to issues of anthropogenic climate change, the projected consequences and the general lack of sustainability of development and engineering.
Research Interests
I spent a year in industry working in project management and mechanical design mainly on Heathrow’s Terminal 5 expansion. I completed the degree in 2008, and began working in civil design working on the expansion to Stratford station in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
In 2009 I decided to follow my more emotive interest in sustainability and clean energy by studying for a masters in Environmental & Energy Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
Following this I knew it was the area I wanted work in and contribute to during my career so applied to the doctoral training centre in Low carbon technologies at Leeds University.
Future Work
Since starting the program I have found it extremely interesting and full of opportunity, working with a nice group of enthusiastic and engaged colleagues.
I hope to begin my PhD on Carbon Capture in June doing experimental work on a new oxy-fuel rig being built in Sheffield. I hope this will give me good relevant practical experience for later moving into industry and help making it a commercial low carbon technology.
